Monte Jones

I met Monte Jones on the stairs of the VCU dance building in the fall of 1997. He was watching me try and park my buick skylark, which he called the “winnebago.” He wasn’t judging or laughing, just noticing the difficulty of it all. He acknowledged my humiliation without pity. We’ve been friends ever since. We made dances together, had nights at the club, ADF/spells/sage ash/, scripps awards, senior projects, ACDFA, calls to Ron Nick’s piece… a highlight performing at Columbia. Driving the bus. Sam dying. We never dated. He is like family to me.

In school, we made two maybe three duets together.

One that the school wouldn’t put up because he was late for a rehearsal…we had a meeting about it but they felt like they had to make an example. Ugh, all these years this has left me feeling like we have more to say together.
