Emergent

I was speaking to my friend the other day about how past dance influences can sometimes usurp emergent ideas, particularly in my past body of work. In many ways, this can dictate my works as oppose to inform them.

I want memories to be active materials that are accessed “in the moment.” This includes past dance experiences, rehearsals, and conversations. Since they are deeply in my body, they tend to come up. But it’s more important at this point for me to figure out how these dance memories are acted upon not as a recreation, but as a creation towards something new. How is the past part of something that is emerging in the present? Thanks, Tess…you’re a pal.
